Meditation

By Yael Palgon

In this day and age it is difficult to become in touch with our inner thoughts. Technology and the frenetic nature of our everyday lives distract us from this goal. Sometimes we are afraid to delve into the inner cores of our minds. Some of our thoughts and wishes can be embarrassing and denial seems like the better option. So why would someone want to become self-actualized?

It will give you the opportunity to understand why you behave in certain ways and will allow you to build upon your natural abilities.

What are some steps for self-actualization and building intrapersonal intelligence?

  • Every day take out ten minutes and write a list of your accomplishments. Write another list of objectives, goals you wish to accomplish. This is your own personal list. Write anything! No goal is too big for you to accomplish. No goal is too small to write down.
  • Take another ten minutes before you go to sleep, to meditate. Take deep breaths and try not to think about anything that makes you anxious. If necessary look for a book on meditation.
  • Try to keep a diary. Try to record your innermost thoughts and feelings. See where this takes you.
  • Read books that inspire you.
  • Try to achieve an environment in your life where you feel safe. Find people you are able to talk to and be honest with. Without a sense of belonging it will be difficult to achieve self-actualization.
  • The road to self-actualization is not limited to this list.

The Ultimate Goal

When you become more in touch with yourself, you will feel more comfortable with yourself and others. You will become less anxious, be able to pinpoint your goals and life mission. You will be able to recognize your strengths and weaknesses. Maybe even your health will improve. Self-actualization is a life-long process and difficult to achieve. With the right dedication and motivation, you can become more in touch with yourself and improve your life!

While I do many of these things, my biggest challenging is quieting the chatter in my brain. I am not usually successful at meditating. Any suggestions?

To Lisa- Maybe try to imagine a tranquil setting and only concentrate on that idea of that place. Also try to repeat a line that has meaning to you. Hope this helps. Meditating isn't essential to self-actualization, but it can help.
